Melipona Bees Program
Melipona bees, known for their crucial role in the ecosystem as pollinators for up to 46 different crops, are at the heart of our sustainability and circular initiatives. This insight, drawn from the research of Real – Luna et al. (2022), underscores the essential part these bees play not only in bolstering our food security but also as vital environmental bioindicators, signaling the health of our ecosystems. Recognizing their importance, our comprehensive Melipona Bee program is designed to intertwine ecological preservation with community empowerment.
In collaboration with five local schools and COdN, our initiative broadens its reach by welcoming participation from interested producers. A key focus of the program is to uplift single mothers—those working on farms and those in the surrounding communities—by engaging them in the multifaceted world of honey production. This honey, known for its medicinal properties and value in domestic and commercial spheres, offers a pathway to economic independence and sustainability.
To move forward with our vision, we have launched an intensive three-month training program aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and skills required for sustainable honey production. The program encompasses the use of attractant-based traps for bee capture and the careful transfer of these bees to specially designed wooden boxes, creating new colonies. This delicate process is meticulously overseen by our dedicated farm team, who are committed to extending this opportunity to individuals from neighboring communities, embracing diversity and inclusivity across all spectrums of background, gender, or age.
By fostering a deep connection between community members and the environment, our Melipona Bee program not only aims at protecting these vital pollinators but also at creating a ripple effect of benefits. These range from enhancing biodiversity and supporting crop yields to facilitating socio-economic development through sustainable agriculture practices. As we continue to expand and enrich this program, we remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing an ecosystem where both nature and communities can thrive together, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for all.
