Private Wildlife Reserve
Cacao Oro’s dedication to environmental conservation and wildlife protection has achieved a new milestone with the prestigious MARENA certification, a recognition of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding natural habitats and the diverse species we host. This accolade highlights the significance of our Private Wildlife Reserve, which spans an impressive 770.14 hectares designated as High Conservation Value (HCV) land. Within this verdant sanctuary, we have identified 237 protected species, underscoring the rich biodiversity under our stewardship.
Our reserve is a haven for wildlife, including 22 species of reptiles—three of which are endangered, 24 species of mammals with 16 categorized as endangered, 15 species of amphibians including one endangered species, and a vibrant avian community of 176 species, 23 of which face the threat of extinction. These species are meticulously monitored, with threat levels assessed in accordance with the stringent guidelines set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as well as national and Nicaraguan Red List criteria. Notably, 11 of these species are listed by the IUCN under conservation concern, highlighting the critical need for our protective efforts
In a novel conservation approach, we have encouraged neighboring farm families to participate in breeding programs for species suitable for captive reproduction. This initiative seeks to foster sustainable populations that can be reintroduced to their native forest environments, thereby bolstering the ecosystem. Furthermore, our team’s commitment to conservation is reinforced through continuous education and training, including participation in courses offered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This ensures that our conservation measures are grounded in the latest scientific research and best practices in wildlife preservation.
The achievement of the Private Wildlife Reserve Certification from MARENA is a testament to COdN’s dedication to environmental excellence. It serves as a call to action for the broader community to join us in our quest to protect and preserve our planet’s invaluable wildlife for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations. Together, through concerted efforts and shared commitment, we can ensure the survival and flourishing of these species within their natural habitats, securing a legacy of biodiversity and ecological harmony.
