United Nations Recognition

Cacao Oro Recognized by the United Nations for Contributions to Sustainable Development

In a landmark acknowledgment, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has spotlighted Cacao Oro de Nicaragua (COdN) as a pivotal social, economic, and environmental beacon in the Northeastern RAACN region of Nicaragua. This recognition underscores COdN’s profound commitment to fostering sustainable development and innovation within the cocoa industry and beyond.

COdN has had the privilege of hosting numerous esteemed regional and global non-governmental organizations, including UNIDO, the European Union (E.U.), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE), and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). These organizations, along with the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Family, Community, Cooperative and Associative Economy (MEFCCA), have conducted several visits to COdN’s operations. These visits offered them a comprehensive overview of COdN’s cocoa plantations, social initiatives, and sustainability strategies, as well as an inside look at its state-of-the-art industrial facilities, which boast rigorous quality standards and proprietary designs optimized for post-harvest cocoa processing.

COdN’s unwavering dedication to sustainability has attracted national and global recognition, highlighting its conservation efforts, bee management practices, plastic recycling programs, and composting initiatives. A recent in-depth interview conducted by UNIDO with COdN featured a panel discussion to evaluate COdN’s participation in UNIDO’s programs and to assess the outcomes of this institutional relationship. This dialogue aimed to further enhance COdN’s activities and to identify future prospects and opportunities for growth.

Renowned for driving significant innovation and technological advancements across the cocoa value chain, COdN provides invaluable guidance to other organizations seeking expertise in cocoa management. UNIDO has emerged as a key ally in this journey, supporting the development of resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization. The partnership between COdN and UNIDO exemplifies a shared commitment to poverty eradication, inclusiveness, and building productive capacities through collaboration with all stakeholders involved in the process of industrialization.

This acknowledgment by UNIDO not only celebrates COdN’s achievements but also reinforces the global movement towards sustainable development, setting a benchmark for responsible business practices in the agricultural sector and beyond. Cacao Oro de Nicaragua continues to lead by example, demonstrating that it is possible to harmonize industrial success with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
